It is difficult to put into words how happy I am when I see good things happening in Romania when it comes to travel possibilities.
I had the chance to revisit Oradea after many years and wow… it is clearly not the city I knew 10-15 years ago.
Oradea’s restoration stands for job wonderfully done and is clearly worth a place on the tourist map of Romania.
This also for its neighbouring with Baile Felix, a famous resort in Romania for thermal waters. I haven’t been to Baile Felix lately and I don’t know if it has also developed so beautifully, but Oradea was indeed a nice surprise.
Its old centre is almost completely restored and the buildings and churches look just amazing. They still need small finishing touches, but until summer everything should be finalized.
So, plan a trip to Oradea this year and you will not regret it as you will encounter beautiful architecture, heath – benefit thermal waters and interesting food with Hungarian influences.
Don’t forget that Oradea is in Transylvania, area that was declared by Lonely Planet as top region to visit in 2016 and there are so many things to see here: amazing cities, villages where life is simple and the nature spectacular and mostly virgin.
I had a limited amount time to spend, but I managed to squeeze in a late night walk, in which I could admire the beautiful Art Nouveau architecture of the buildings and churches in the warm light, and one on a rainy afternoon.
Both were so comforting and gave me so much energy, probably also because I’ve seen that you can really change a place with commitment and hard work.
I will leave the pictures to speak for Oradea now…
Oradea airport was recently renovated and receives only domestic flights for now. Hopefully, it will soon open to international flights. Still, you can fly from Bucharest daily. By car is also an option, especially if you are coming from or via Hungary. You might also consider train or buses should you come from other areas of Romania.
You can visit the old center on foot as everything is within walking distance or by taxi as it is not at all expensive.
There are various hotels for different budgets. Even in Oradea there are hotels with thermal water pools so you can enjoy a bath in these miraculous water, enjoy the spas. I stayed at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Oradea and they really had 5 stars services. However, you can also stay in Baile Felix and just take a day trip to Oradea.
Foodie: plenty of choices, but most common are those with Hungarian influences and most restaurant are quite affordable.
